About
Our Heritage
The University of Mkar, Mkar stands as a distinguished legacy of faith, vision, and commitment to transformative education. Established by the Universal Reformed Christian Church (URCC), widely known as Nongu u Kristu u I Ser Sha Tar (NKST), the institution was founded on a strong spiritual foundation with a clear mandate to integrate Christian values with academic excellence. Since receiving its license from the National Universities Commission (NUC) on 6th June 2005, the University has steadily grown into a respected centre of learning, dedicated to shaping lives and building futures.
Situated at the serene foot of the Mkar Hills in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, the University’s environment reflects its commitment to discipline, reflection, and intellectual growth. From its inception, it has been envisioned as a “crown jewel” of the NKST, embodying the Church’s mission to provide education that not only imparts knowledge but also nurtures character and faith.
The leadership history of the University reflects a continuity of vision and progressive development. Beginning with the pioneering efforts of Prof. (Mrs) Nancy Ngunan Agbe, and followed by successive Vice-Chancellors—each contributing uniquely to the institution’s growth—the University has sustained a trajectory of excellence, innovation, and stability. This legacy of leadership has strengthened its academic structures, expanded its programmes, and enhanced its reputation within and beyond Nigeria.
At its core, the heritage of the University of Mkar, Mkar is defined by its unwavering commitment to producing graduates who are not only intellectually equipped but also morally upright and service-oriented. The institution’s philosophy of developing the “total person” continues to guide its operations, ensuring that education remains comprehensive, relevant, and transformative.
Today, the University proudly upholds its heritage as a faith-based institution that places God at the centre of learning, fosters academic excellence, and prepares individuals to serve both God and humanity with integrity, competence, and compassion.
